There’s a popular myth claiming that you should drink two liters of water per day in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. But still, is this actually true?

According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, a proper water goal, including all the beverages and food you consume daily, revolves around 2.7 liters per day for women and 3.7 liters for men. Sure, it sounds significantly more than the ‘famous’ 2 liters, but it’s important to remember that this includes the total daily water consumption.
To be more specific, many of the beverages and foods we consume contribute to these amounts, as 20 percent of the daily water intake can come from food, so the final quantity depends on what you’re eating.

However, there are a few more aspects that can have an impact on the total quantity of water we drink per day. Most people tend to ignore these and end up feeling dehydrated, without knowing why.
First of all, it’s your exercise routine. If you’re hitting the gym hard, you will surely drink more water, before, during, as well as after the workout. As a side note, it’s highly recommended to have a sports drink with you at the gym, especially if you’re following a high-intensity interval training session!
Then, there’s your location. Surprisingly or not, this can have a very big impact on your hydration level, especially if you live in a humid climate or at high altitude. This increases the risk of dehydration and makes you need more water each day.
Moving on, it also depends on your health. For example, if you’re dealing with a fever or conditions like diarrhea or vomiting, you will lose a lot of water. Therefore, you need to replenish the lost amounts.
And last but not least, even though this is a rather special condition, it depends if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. This requires proper hydration, as women need to increase the daily water quantity to 3.1 liters per day.
Can I lose weight if I drink more water?
Besides wanting to know how much they should drink, people are also curious about water’s influence on somebody who wants to drop some pounds.
Drinking water helps you – physically speaking – to fill up some space in the stomach, therefore decreasing appetite. Still, make sure you’re not confusing hunger cues and internal thirst, as this could lead to overcompensation.
If you want to lose weight, combine exercise with drinking enough water per day and you should see some results. Also, stick to water and avoid, as much as possible, sweet beverages, like soda or juice, as these have, in most case, a high caloric intake.
